Drone Brood Trapping
Profile

Number of Hives: 100
Operation type: Honey production, consulting and education
Glenn has trialled the use of drone brood trapping as a primary Varroa mite treatment method in his hives. This method involves placing drone brood frames in the brood box for up to 21-24 days before removing and placing in a freezer to kill the mites before they emerge.
It is essential when using this method that frames are removed before drones emerge to avoid causing a mite bomb in your hives.
Glenn discusses frame options, cleaning and reusing frames, limitations of the method and using the method in conjunction with chemicals when mite loads are high.
‘I think drone brood trapping is a great mechanical method for anyone that’s got bees.’
